- India's first National anthem
The song Vande Mataram was frequently sung at protest meetings during India's Struggle for independence. At the proclamation of the Provisional Government of Free India in Singapore in October 1943, Vande Mataram was sung by the crowd. Muslims were, however, not comfortable with the expressly Hindu metaphors used in the song, and disliked the book, Anandamath, in which it had been first published. The leaders of the Indian National Army in Singapore were aware of this problem, and hoped that Subhas Chandra Bose, the head of the INA and the Provisional Government, would settle it.
- A slightly varied version of the song was adopted by Subhash Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army in 1941 as the national anthem, called ‘Shubh Sukh Chain’, which also became popular in India since.
- After Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose shifted his base to South-East Asia in 1943, he along with two of his generals Mumtaz Hussain and Colonel Abid Hasan Safrani translated the lyrics and composed this song ‘Subh Sukh Chain’.
- Captain Ram Singh Thakuri composed the music for original ‘Subh Sukh Chain’ in such a way that it evokes patriotism and love for the motherland. Thus a song was created which became the National Anthem for the Provisional Government of Free India.
- ‘Subh Sukh Chain’ is touted to be the National Anthem of Netaji’s Indian National Army (INA) and was inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Jana Gana Mana’ (Indian National Anthem).
- ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was adopted as the country’s National Anthem by the Constituent Assembly of India on January 24, 1950, the last day of its last session.
This is a small article which tells you very clearly how enthusiastic our freedom fighters were to get our country free from the British Rule
